The SAMRC’s Intramural Units are the organisation’s internal research divisions which employ specialist scientists from various fields to conduct laboratory investigations, clinical research and public health studies. The Intramural Units focus their research on the leading causes of death in South Africa which include Tuberculosis (TB), HIV, Non-communicable Diseases like cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, along with alcohol and drug abuse, among others. Women’s health is another key focus area. Research conducted by the SAMRC’s Intramural Units has provided the South African government and National Department of Health with information and insights needed for health planning and assessments.
